APPLICATION TO BECOME A LEADERSHIP ACADEMY FELLOW
The application process for The Leadership Academy is designed to ensure that Fellows will fully participate in the program and benefit from it. Toward that end, the commitment of the applicant, the support of the supervisor and the identification of a mentor are critical. The Advisory Board will assign and secure the commitment of the mentor, but the applicant’s suggestions of possible mentors will facilitate a successful pairing.
Applications are due March 1. Applicants should submit Parts I-VI via email to mking@bama.ua.edu. Part VII, the letter(s) of support, should be submitted separately by the writer(s), not the applicant, to the same email address by the March 1deadline.

III. SUGGESTIONS FOR MENTOR
A highlight of the Leadership Academy experience will be the mentoring relationship. Please give the names of at least three people you can see yourself working with and learning from. Persons who have indicated a willingness to serve as mentors are listed on the website, but you are not limited to these persons. It would be helpful if you could order (rank) your initial preferences for mentor. It is not necessary for you to approach a potential mentor. Instead, it is the role of the selection committee to arrange mentors for applicants chosen to be Fellows.

Briefly (approximately 250 words or less) outline your vision for using the knowledge gained from participation in the Leadership Academy, keeping in mind that promotion or career advancement is often contingent on geographic mobility. A letter of support is required from the applicant’s supervisor or immediate superior. It should clearly state the extent of the supervisor’s support. At a minimum, the supervisor should permit you (1) four days over the course of the year for you to fully participate in Leadership Academy workshops (2) occasional additional time for participation in Leadership Academy events (3) time and cooperation toward the completion of a project or activity with an assigned mentor who may be or may not be in your field or department/college/division.
Letters of support for faculty who wish to participate in the SECAC Academic Leadership Development Program must also indicate support for attendance at two three-day workshops (one during the fall and one during the winter/spring). Costs for attendance at SECAC ALDP workshops will be borne by the University as a member of the SECAC Academic Consortium.
Only faculty may participate in the SECAC ALDP program. If a supervisor would like to provide a similar experience for a staff Fellow, this should be stated in the letter of support. Similar experiences may be conferences for aspiring chief officers offered by professional associations, executive leadership programs offered as continuing education, or well-respected leadership conferences. Such support is not required, and costs will not be covered by The Leadership Academy.
Examples of other (optional) support that your supervisor may choose to give are inclusion in special projects or assignments, nomination for awards, or encouragement to participate in regional or national professional organizations.
Letters of support should be submitted directly by the writer to the selection committee via email to mking@bama.ua.edu. Letters of support are not to be submitted as a part of the applicant’s document.
FELLOWS WILL BE ANNOUNCED BY MAY 1.
