Expectation of Leadership Academy Fellows
- Attend four local one-day workshops in their entirety.
- Actively participate in Leadership Academy workshops by preparing adequately, contributing to discussions, and creating an environment conducive to the leadership development of all participants
- Foster a professional mentoring relationship with an assigned mentor by showing respect and consideration of the mentor
- Meet with the mentor at least six times over the course of the year
- Complete a project or activity under the direction of a mentor or the mentor’s delegate.
Expectations of Leadership Academy Mentors
- Get to know the Fellow well enough to understand his/her long-term aspirations and hopes for the mentoring experience
- Meet with the Fellow at least six times over the course of a year
- Be familiar with Leadership Academy topics and presentations enough to provide insights and reactions to the Fellow if requested (attendance at the four sessions is not required, but recommended)
- Shape a project or activity for the Fellow that
• Will be substantive and useful
• Will help the Fellow meet his/her learning goals
• Can be completed within a few months
• Can be done with available resources
• You can facilitate and/or provide guidance for, as necessary (this can be delegated if the mentor cannot personally provide necessary guidance)
- Advise the Fellow of next steps in developing leadership skills
- Assist the Fellow in developing a strategy for professional development and/or career advancement.
Additional Expectations of SECAC Academic Leadership Development Program Fellows
- Attend two SECAC workshops in their entirety. The 2008-09 workshops are October 20-22 at The University of South Carolina and February 25-27 at The University of Arkansas.
- Be fully engaged in the workshops
- Travel with the group whenever possible
- Read the preparatory material
- Contribute to the discussion groups
- Serve as mentors to future Fellows
